Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage expressed growing optimism about his team’s prospects as they continue their push towards the play-offs following a 3-1 home win against Braintree Town. Savage highlighted the team’s momentum and the unpredictable nature of the upcoming play-offs, stating, “anybody can beat anybody.”
Goals from D’Mani Mellor, Tom Knowles, and Nick Haughton propelled Forest Green past a struggling Braintree side, who are now focused on avoiding bottom place. Savage reflected on the progress made this season: “Play-offs were the goal; 22 wins match last season’s total. We’re scoring more goals—seven more than last year.”
The manager praised individual performances, especially Mellor, who scored his third goal of the season, and noted the squad’s depth with new players getting valuable minutes. Savage emphasized the looming opportunity: “In four weeks, we could be league players. That’s the goal, what an opportunity. Let’s grasp it and give everything on and off the pitch to be ready for the play-offs.”

The game’s opening goal came in the 37th minute when Mellor scored after a controversial moment involving an injured Braintree captain. Despite a brief equalizer from Lewis Walker for Braintree, Forest Green responded strongly. Knowles restored the lead with a well-timed header following a saved shot, and shortly after, Haughton sealed the victory with a powerful finish following a swift counterattack.
Savage acknowledged defensive lapses but praised the team’s reaction and hunger for victory. Notably, Cian Harries made his first appearance of the season, bringing experience and stability to the backline.
To prepare for a potential penalty shootout, Savage had players practice penalties in front of a small but passionate crowd, simulating the pressure they might face in the play-offs. “If we score five from five, we’ll have a great chance,” he remarked confidently following flawless penalty practice.
The win places Forest Green in a strong position as they approach the crucial final weeks of the season, with the manager urging his squad to maintain focus and intensity in pursuit of promotion.
