Improved Safety and Efficiency for Slimbridge Energy Storage Facility

A 36MW battery storage facility near Slimbridge is set to undergo a significant revamp to enhance its safety and efficiency. The proposed layout changes, presented by Slimbridge Energy Limited, aim to refine the site’s operations while maintaining its approved development parameters.

The proposed adjustments include a 180-degree rotation of the 132kV transformer, a reduction in the number of BESS containers from 22 to 9, and an expansion of the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) control room. These modifications have been carefully designed to bolster functionality, safety, and maintainability without altering the site’s character, scale, or impact.

Slimbridge Energy Limited emphasized that the revised layout allows for greater spacing between BESS units, surpassing standard ‘stand-off’ distances recommended by the manufacturer for enhanced fire mitigation. Additionally, the DNO control room will be enlarged in compliance with National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) requirements, with a brick construction.

The proposed changes also involve a slight repositioning of site infrastructure to improve fire safety and maintenance access, while preserving the approved landscape strategy, including boundary planting and wildflower grassland to provide visual and ecological advantages.

An accompanying visual impact assessment indicates that the proposed alterations will not significantly affect the site’s visibility or landscape effect, as the site is well enclosed and integrates seamlessly with the wider landscape.

Seeking approval under Section 73 of the Town and Country Planning Act, the proposal ensures that the changes remain within the previously approved red line boundary, without introducing new visual, ecological, or traffic impacts.

The application is pending a decision from Stroud District Council, with potential further submissions expected to address outstanding conditions such as surface water drainage.
