Plans for a new Aldi supermarket and Costa Coffee drive-thru have been approved in Bourton-on-the-Water, one of Gloucestershire’s most popular tourist destinations. The decision by Cotswold District Council comes after extensive debate over the impact of tourism on the village and concerns about facilities primarily serving visitors rather than residents.
The store will be situated at Bourton Industrial Park and represents an investment exceeding £7 million, expected to provide up to 60 new jobs, along with additional employment during construction and within the supply chain. The scheme includes 127 parking spaces, including accessible and parent-and-child bays, ten electric vehicle charging points with capacity for expansion, and newly landscaped areas.
While some local opposition was raised concerning traffic, litter, and competition with local hospitality businesses, consultations revealed substantial support. The council received approximately 158 supportive comments contrasting with around eight objections. Several residents expressed approval, highlighting the need for affordable shopping options over the currently overpriced, tourist-focused local outlets.
Opponents voiced concerns about the environmental impact associated with increased visitors, particularly regarding litter, and the potential harm to local independent cafes. Tesco, which operates a supermarket nearby in Stow-on-the-Wold, also lodged an objection.
The proposed site is a grassed field on the northern edge of the village, designated in the district’s local plan for employment use.
Rob Jones, Aldi’s real estate director, said the approval was a significant step forward, allowing the company to offer greater choice and convenience to the community while supporting local employment. He thanked residents and stakeholders for their engagement and support throughout the planning process.
This development is seen by many as a welcome addition to the village, providing amenities that aim to benefit local people amid ongoing discussions about managing the effects of over-tourism in the area.
