I’m an energy expert - 1 simple step can save you £315 but you must act fast

As energy prices continue to rise, households are feeling the financial strain more than ever. An energy efficiency specialist has now shared a straightforward way to potentially save £315 on your annual energy bills — but the clock is ticking.

Recent updates from Ofgem indicate that from October 1 to December 31, 2025, the energy price cap for a typical household paying by Direct Debit will rise by 2% to £1,755 annually. While this is still £625 lower than peak crisis levels in early 2023, many families continue to struggle with their energy costs.

In light of this, Stephen Hankinson of Electric Radiators Direct highlights switching energy suppliers as one of the fastest and simplest ways to reduce expenses. “Some energy companies offer tariffs up to 18% cheaper than the price cap, potentially saving you as much as £315 a year,” Hankinson explains.

To take advantage of these savings, Hankinson advises households to check their current tariff details, either via a recent bill or by logging into their energy account. Knowing when your current deal expires is crucial, as many find themselves on costly standard variable tariffs once fixed deals end.

“Fixed-rate tariffs can be beneficial,” Hankinson notes, “because they lock in your monthly payments, protecting you from future price hikes.” The ideal time to switch is as your fixed-term deal nears its end. For those who began a one-year contract in November 2024, the window to switch is now.

Energy providers must notify customers when contracts are ending, and switching within 49 days of that date usually means no exit fees. Hankinson suggests marking your calendar to start looking for better deals as you approach this period.

Switching suppliers is quick and seamless, typically completed within five working days, with no interruption to your energy supply—so you won’t have to worry about staying warm during the transition.
