I’m a Doctor — This Simple Exercise Can Boost Heart Health and Help Prevent Cancer

Staying physically active is essential for good health, but it doesn’t always mean hitting the gym or following complicated workout routines. Dr Amir Khan, a well-known medical professional and ITV presenter, emphasizes the power of a simple, free exercise: walking. According to Dr Khan, incorporating regular walks into your routine can offer remarkable health benefits.

The NHS recommends adults aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise weekly, but Dr Khan explains that just 30 minutes of walking a day can make a significant difference. In a recent Instagram video, he outlined five key benefits of walking regularly:

  1. Heart Health: Walking improves cardiovascular fitness by lowering the risk of heart attacks, reducing blood pressure, and enhancing cholesterol levels. It can also help regulate blood sugar, making it beneficial for preventing diabetes.

  1. Joint Care: Regular walking helps lubricate your joints and strengthens muscles around them, increasing blood flow to cartilage. This may reduce the risk of conditions like osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, while maintaining flexibility as you age.

  2. Cancer Prevention: Research shows that at least two and a half hours of moderate exercise, including walking, can lower the risk of certain cancers such as bowel, breast, and kidney cancer.

  3. Immune Support: Walking reduces stress, improves circulation, promotes better sleep, and decreases inflammation—all factors that contribute to a stronger immune system.

  4. Mental Wellbeing: Walking releases mood-enhancing chemicals in the brain, which can alleviate stress and improve your overall emotional health.

Dr Khan advises starting slowly if walking is new to you and gradually increasing your daily duration. Ideally, aim for around 30 minutes each day, ideally in a pleasant environment such as a park. Walking with a friend adds the social benefit of conversation, making it even more enjoyable.

If you miss a day or two, don’t worry—just get back out there as soon as you can. With these simple steps, walking can become a powerful part of your health routine that supports your body and mind alike.
