“If you can’t wear the shirt with a bit of desire, you won’t be wearing it many more times” - Robbie Savage after Home Defeat to Boston United

Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage has issued a stark warning after his team’s disheartening 3-2 home defeat to Boston United at The New Lawn. Savage lamented the team’s poor attitude and lack of desire on the pitch, which has led to a string of poor results.

Boston United seized control in the first half, taking a commanding 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Frankie Maguire, Jamie Grimes, and Tom Cursons. The Pilgrims then sat back to protect their advantage, securing three valuable points in their late push for a play-off spot.

“The fans deserve an apology,” Savage said. “I spoke to some before the game and told them this team needs their support now. They could have reacted much worse given the first-half display. But the attitude, desire, and body language from certain players was unacceptable. If you can’t wear the Forest Green shirt with pride and fight, you won’t be wearing it many more times because I won’t tolerate that.”

Only Kyle McAllister and Jili Buyabu emerged with credit in the opening period, with McAllister’s leadership earning him the captain’s armband.

Savage criticized Ashqar Ahmed for conceding a penalty after a reckless challenge on Gregory Sloggett, which Maguire converted confidently. The second goal saw Grimes head in from a short corner, exploiting defensive lapses similar to recent mistakes. Cursons added a third after capitalizing on a midfield error.

Despite introducing five substitutes by the 55th minute, Savage felt his players lacked energy and commitment. “Some looked like they hadn’t kicked a ball. They were hiding, under pressure, and didn’t want the ball,” he said.

Forest Green’s defense has crumbled at home recently, conceding nine goals in three games. Savage acknowledged the challenge of instilling desire and tactical awareness in his squad with only 11 games remaining to secure a play-off spot.

In response, Savage is changing the team’s approach to training and recovery. “Normally, I give them a day off after a game, but now they’re in every day. We must figure out why this is happening and how to fix it,” he stated.

He emphasized the need for intensity and aggression from kickoff. “We were unplayable three months ago. Now we look lost. My message is clear: start strong, win your duels, run the channels, and play in their half.”

Savage admitted that missing the play-offs would open the team to criticism but insists they remain committed to getting back on track.
