Stroud’s beloved Five Valleys Shopping Centre is set to reopen next week following an extensive £31 million redevelopment, with iconic actress and presenter Dame Joanna Lumley scheduled to officiate the grand opening.
Since acquiring the centre in 2018, Yorkshire-based property developers Dransfield Properties Ltd. have transformed the formerly outdated Merrywalks Centre into a thriving modern complex that shines a spotlight on Stroud’s town centre.
The redevelopment has introduced a cutting-edge medical centre, a new town library, a bustling food hall with street food market, stylish office spaces, and a diverse retail mix boasting 85% local independent tenants. Visitors can also enjoy leisure offerings such as a cinema and Stroud Bowl, which hosts national and international competitions, making Five Valleys a dynamic mixed-use destination.

Dame Joanna Lumley, the BAFTA-winning star of ‘Absolutely Fabulous,’ will officially open the centre on Thursday, April 23, at 12.30 pm, unveiling the latest addition: The Home of Vintage. This vibrant marketplace unites over 30 traders offering vintage, retro, upcycled, and pre-loved treasures. With colorful shutters and retro-inspired décor, the space showcases artists, makers, booksellers, home décor specialists, craftspeople, and fashion traders, reflecting Stroud’s creative spirit.
Originally launched in December in a partial phase, The Home of Vintage has quickly become a regional hotspot and is poised to be the go-to destination for vintage enthusiasts. It perfectly complements Five Valleys’ emphasis on creativity and supporting local independent businesses.
Mark Dransfield, Chairman of Dransfield Properties, commented, “Stroud is a unique town, and we aimed to create something vibrant that truly reflects its character. This redevelopment has been eight years in the making, and we’re immensely proud of what has been achieved. The Home of Vintage captures Stroud’s passion for creativity and pre-loved goods, providing opportunities for family-run and independent businesses. Having Dame Joanna join us for this celebration makes the moment even more special.”
Enhanced by murals, unique artwork, and a nostalgic soundtrack, The Home of Vintage adds a fresh and lively dimension to the Five Valleys Shopping Centre, marking the completion of its ambitious multi-year transformation.
