I visited UK’s best zoo just 50 minutes from Gloucester — one word says it all

Tucked away in the rolling Oxfordshire countryside, Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens stands out as one of the UK’s premier zoos. Recently crowned Britain’s best zoo in a nationwide survey, it scored highly for species diversity, guest satisfaction, and value for money.

As a fan of exploring the Cotswolds, I couldn’t wait to see what the park had in store. From the moment you enter, it’s clear the design prioritises both animal welfare and visitor comfort. The sprawling 160 acres of parkland and beautifully maintained gardens offer a tranquil setting perfect for a relaxed day out.

Home to over 260 species, each animal enjoys spacious, naturalistic habitats that blend seamlessly with the surroundings. As I wandered through, I encountered impressive wildlife from around the globe—giraffes, white rhinos, lemurs, Asiatic lions, Humboldt penguins, and red pandas among them.

The animals appeared healthy and well cared for, backed up by the park’s glowing reviews and awards in both animal welfare and visitor experience.

A standout moment was the giraffe feeding experience, an optional extra that proved unforgettable. Standing close to these gentle giants, guided by a knowledgeable keeper who shared fascinating facts about their behaviour, diet, and conservation, was truly magical. Observing their distinctive long eyelashes and prehensile tongues up close was a highlight.

Despite its top-tier status, the park never felt crowded or rushed. The serene gardens and rolling lawns provided plenty of spots to relax and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.

The zoo’s reputation for outstanding value is well deserved. Adult admission is around £19, children three to 16 pay £13.50, and little ones under three enter free. Parking is included, and advance online tickets come with a slight discount. Considering the range of animals, quality of care, and immersive experiences, the admission fee represents excellent value compared to other UK wildlife attractions.

Whether you’re a wildlife lover or looking for a family outing filled with memorable encounters, Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens delivers on all fronts. Combining breathtaking scenery, unique animal experiences, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, it’s easily one of the best days out I’ve had. If I had to sum it up in a single word, it would be incredible.
