I visited UK’s best zoo 50 minutes from Gloucester — I could sum it up in 1 word

Nestled in the rolling countryside of Oxfordshire, Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens stands out as one of the finest zoos in the UK. Recently named Britain’s best zoo in a nationwide survey, it impressed judges with its species diversity, guest satisfaction, and exceptional value.

As a fan of the Cotswolds, I was eager to explore what this acclaimed park had to offer. From the moment you enter, it’s clear that every detail has been thoughtfully designed to create a welcoming environment for both animals and visitors.

Spanning 160 acres of beautifully maintained parkland and gardens, the atmosphere here is peaceful and perfect for a leisurely day out. The zoo is home to more than 260 species, each housed in spacious, naturalistic enclosures that blend seamlessly with the surroundings.

Throughout the visit, I encountered a spectacular range of animals from across the globe, including giraffes, white rhinos, lemurs, Asiatic lions, Humboldt penguins, and red pandas. Every animal seemed healthy and well cared for—a testament to the park’s high standards and recent awards for animal welfare.

A standout moment was the giraffe feeding experience, a special activity available by separate booking. Coming face-to-face with these gentle giants was unforgettable. The knowledgeable keeper shared fascinating insights on their behavior, diet, and conservation efforts, while I marveled at their long lashes and dexterous tongues up close.

Despite its status as a top UK wildlife attraction, the park never felt crowded or rushed. The spacious gardens and gentle lawns provide plenty of spots to relax, reflect, and soak in the natural beauty.

One key reason the park topped the rankings is its excellent value. Standard admission is around £19 for adults and £13.50 for children aged three to 16, with discounts for advance online bookings. Children under three enter free, and parking costs are included. Considering the scale, quality of care, and range of experiences, this is outstanding value compared to many other zoos.

Whether you’re a wildlife lover or a family seeking a memorable day out, Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens delivers in spades. Its stunning setting, immersive experiences, and diverse animal collection make it one of the most incredible visits I’ve ever had. If I had to sum it up in a single word: incredible.
