As the sunny Bank Holiday weekend approaches, many are eager to soak up the warm weather with day trips. The UK boasts an array of beautiful destinations on our doorstep, and the Cotswolds is among the most popular. Known for its rolling hills, charming stone cottages, and picturesque market squares, this region has long attracted visitors, boosted further by filming locations and viral social media posts.
Villages like Bourton-on-the-Water captivate visitors with their scenic rivers and iconic stone bridges. On quieter days, it’s a tranquil retreat to sit by the water and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. But during peak season and sunny weekends, the reality can feel very different.
Overtourism has taken its toll on these postcard-perfect villages. Crowds flood the streets, leading to congestion, parking difficulties, and pressure on local services. A recent visitor, Chloe, captured this tension in a video filmed in Bourton-on-the-Water, showcasing the packed paths and crowded bridges that replaced the village’s usual calm.

Chloe shared, “What should have felt peaceful was packed and overwhelming. While tourism likely supports local businesses, it’s hard not to feel that the charm is fading in this quaint, rural village. If you visit, consider coming early—maybe 6am—to beat the crowds.”
Her video struck a chord with locals, garnering over 13,000 likes and numerous comments from residents expressing frustration. One wrote, “Please stop coming here, I’m just trying to get to work.” Another shared, “It’s a battle just to get to the shops for everyday essentials. I couldn’t do it!”
A resident lamented, “I haven’t taken my kids down to the river for ice cream on a nice day because it’s just too overwhelming. Traffic jams sometimes take over an hour to cross the village. It’s beautiful, yes, but something needs to change about how busy it gets.”
For those eager to visit, locals suggest timing your trip outside the busy spring and summer months. Autumn and winter offer a calmer atmosphere without the chaos. One visitor commented, “The Cotswolds feels so much more peaceful in colder months. The atmosphere is really better when it’s quieter.”
Another shared a similar view: “We visited in March and practically had the place to ourselves. Our summer visit was crowded and stressful, so we definitely learned our lesson.”
If you’re planning to explore the Cotswolds, consider the quieter months to truly appreciate the beauty without the crowds. Otherwise, prepare for busy scenes and packed streets in some of England’s most beloved villages.
