‘I tried Tom Kerridge’s £37 fish and chips – one thing about the batter was so weird’

Hannah Ricketts, a YouTuber focusing on London, lifestyle, and travel, recently visited Tom Kerridge’s Fish & Chips restaurant inside Harrods, Knightsbridge, to try the famed £37 fish and chips. Known for elevating the traditional British dish, Kerridge’s version features market day fish caught fresh from Cornish day boats, paired with thick triple-cooked chips, mushy peas, and a selection of sauces.

While Hannah praised the dish’s presentation and the chips, she found the batter to be puzzlingly bland. “The batter was cooked beautifully—crunchy and lovely—but it tasted like nothing. It was so weird,” she remarked. Hannah also noted that the portion seemed heavy on batter given the size of the fish. Despite enjoying the accompanying sauces like curry sauce and tartare, she described the mushy peas as flavorless and overall found the dish “lacklustre” compared to expectations, especially at the steep price point.

Tom Kerridge has defended the £37 cost by emphasizing the premium quality of the ingredients and pointing to the restaurant’s prestigious location in what he calls “the most beautiful food hall in the world.” He also clarified that pricing decisions aren’t solely his own.

Other diners have had mixed opinions as well. YouTuber Ed Chapman was unimpressed, calling the haddock dry and the batter lacking buttery richness, suggesting customers simply visit a traditional chippy instead. On the other hand, several five-star Google reviewers praised the restaurant for generous portions, a balanced fish-to-batter ratio, flavorful sauces, and a cozy atmosphere, labeling the experience “delicious” and “seamless.”

The debate over Kerridge’s take on the classic fish and chips highlights the challenges of elevating a beloved comfort food without losing its essential character—especially with a premium price tag attached.
