There’s nothing quite like biting into a freshly baked scone, generously topped with cream and jam. As spring approaches, I looked forward to enjoying this classic treat with a cup of tea in the garden. But I couldn’t help wondering— which supermarket actually sells the best scones?
With Easter fast approaching, I set out on a mission to sample scones from several well-known supermarkets: Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Morrisons, and Marks & Spencer. I wanted to find out if there were any real differences in taste, texture, and value.
Starting with Tesco, their scones stood out for being very sweet and delicious. However, they fell to the bottom of my list due to their fragile texture. They crumbled at the slightest touch, making it almost impossible to spread jam or cream without making a mess. Eating one felt like a crumb explosion, leaving bits on my clothes and kitchen surfaces. Although tasty, they were simply too delicate to enjoy comfortably.

Aldi usually impresses with value, but their scones didn’t live up to expectations this time. They were dense and floury, resembling bread rolls more than traditional scones. While sturdy enough to hold toppings, their dryness and heavy texture made them less appealing as a teatime treat.
Lidl offered the most budget-friendly option, and while their scones were acceptable, they didn’t wow me. They had a decent structure and mild sweetness but lacked distinctive flavour, placing them firmly mid-table in my rankings.
Marks & Spencer’s scones caught my eye with their unusual wrinkled appearance and sponge-like texture. At first glance, they seemed more cake than scone, but the taste was superb. These scones were light, flaky, and indulgent, boasting a luxurious flavour that I genuinely enjoyed. Despite this, they weren’t quite the best on the list.
The standout winner for me was Morrisons. Their scones justified their slightly higher price with a perfect balance of buttery flavour and tender, yet firm texture. Soft without being crumbly or dry, these scones could be generously topped with cream and jam without falling apart. The pack included six scones—more than others—and each bite seemed to melt in my mouth. After this experience, I’m excited to shop at Morrisons more often!
In conclusion, while all supermarkets offer decent scones, Morrisons truly delivers the ultimate teatime companion. Whether you’re hosting Easter guests or simply craving a sweet treat, these scones are worth every penny.
