I Tried Frozen Supermarket Yorkshire Puddings: 99p Aldi Pudding Beats Aunt Bessie’s

Yorkshire puddings are an essential part of any roast dinner, offering a delicious, warming complement to a hearty meal. While homemade versions are ideal, frozen Yorkshire puddings bring convenience to the table, allowing for a quick oven bake just minutes before serving.

In a crowded market with numerous options, supermarkets often stock their own-brand Yorkshire puddings alongside famous names like Aunt Bessie’s—the go-to choice for many UK households. Curious to see how these supermarket varieties stack up, I sampled frozen Yorkshire puddings from M&S, Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Lidl, and Sainsbury’s to find out if any could dethrone Aunt Bessie’s.

Starting with M&S, expectations were high due to their puddings' larger size, similar to brand name versions. Unfortunately, the result was disappointing. The puddings cooked unevenly and emerged dry—sometimes even tasting watery—falling well short of the mark.

Tesco’s offering was unimpressive as well. They failed to crisp up properly, remained pale, and were the flattest among all samples. The flavor was overly buttery, which did not complement the pudding as expected.

Sainsbury’s did better in shape retention during baking but showed slight charring. They delivered a familiar flavor but lacked the airy texture that makes Yorkshire puddings so delightful.

Lidl brought a home-cooked feel to their puddings, offering a pleasing crunch for those who prefer their Yorkshire puddings on the crispier side.

Aldi’s Yorkshire puddings impressed the most among supermarket brands. They were light, fluffy, crispy, and tasted very close to the well-known brand but at a fraction of the price. Their quality was hard to fault, coming very close to perfection.

Aunt Bessie’s, the brand leader, produced the largest Yorkshire puddings with an ideal crunch and classic flavor, explaining its popularity and market dominance.

Ultimately, Aldi clinched first place in this taste test. Their budget Yorkshire puddings were golden, melt-in-the-mouth, and provided the perfect crunch with a delicious flavor that leaves you wanting more.
