I Tested Supermarket Toothpastes – Winner Was £2.50 Cheaper Than Colgate

For years, I stuck to my trusted toothpaste, believing it was the best choice for keeping my teeth fresh and spotless. But recently, as prices crept up, I wondered if there might be more affordable options that didn’t compromise on quality.

I decided to test several supermarket own-brand toothpastes against my usual Colgate — comparing Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, and of course, Colgate itself.

Morrisons' toothpaste, priced at just 50p per 100ml, claimed to match Tesco’s qualities. It had a good consistency and a pleasant minty flavor, though I wasn’t a big fan of the taste or texture. Overall, it was a solid choice given the price but didn’t top the list. Score: 6/10.

Sainsbury’s toothpaste, costing £1 for 100ml, was hard to spot, tucked away on the lowest shelf. The texture was great and it helped reduce some dental sensitivity, yet the aftertaste wasn’t enjoyable, and it lacked the refreshing minty burst I’m used to. Score: 6/10.

Asda’s 6-in-1 toothpaste promised to fight cavities, freshen breath, and reduce bacteria. Unfortunately, it was one of the worst testers — my mouth felt unusually dry and thirsty afterward. Despite a nice flavor and costing just 98p per 100ml, it didn’t deliver in performance. Score: 2/10.

The standout was Aldi’s toothpaste, available for only 50p per 100ml, boasting a 4.4-star online rating. It offers a mild mint taste with fluoride and antibacterial benefits to prevent cavities, combat plaque, and freshen breath. Though the flavor was subtle, the overall experience was excellent for the price, and I’ve kept it handy on overnight trips since. Score: 9.5/10.

Aldi’s other offering, priced at 60p for 125ml, was easy to use but left my mouth feeling less clean and refreshed. The flavor was underwhelming and didn’t last long. Score: 2/10.

Colgate, costing around £3 per tube, seemed overpriced. While it lasts longer than some competitors, I didn’t find it left my mouth feeling cleaner or fresher than Tesco’s own brand. The texture was too intense for me, which was another downside. Score: 3/10.

In summary, the supermarket own-brand toothpastes, especially Aldi’s budget option, offer great value without sacrificing quality — making them a smart switch if you want to save money without compromising on your oral care.
