Nestled amid Oxfordshire’s picturesque countryside lies The Killingworth Castle, an exquisite boutique hotel and historic pub that instantly transports you to the rolling hills of Italy. With just eight beautifully appointed rooms housed within honey-hued stone buildings and surrounded by immaculate seasonal gardens, this idyllic retreat offers a uniquely tranquil and luxurious country escape.
Known affectionately as ‘The Killy’, the hotel is perfectly positioned in Wootton, just a 30-minute drive from Oxford’s historic centre. This prime location provides easy access to some of the Cotswolds’ most captivating spots, including Burford, Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury, and the charming town of Woodstock, home to the famed Blenheim Palace.
Owned and operated by the husband and wife team Jim and Claire Alexander, The Killingworth Castle combines rustic farmhouse character with sophisticated boutique hotel elegance. From the moment I arrived, the warm hospitality of the attentive staff and the timeless, welcoming atmosphere made me feel instantly at home. The setting, imbued with an almost Mediterranean allure, made staying here a memorable highlight of my country getaway.

My room was located in the charming stable block, offering a cozy hideaway that seemed straight out of a fairytale. Exposed beams, bare brickwork, and sloping walls created a secluded ambience, while a grand rustic oak four-poster bed and a roll-top bath beneath a skylight added touches of luxury. Each room is individually styled with carefully selected antique furnishings and includes a complimentary English sherry on arrival—perfect for a quiet pre-dinner drink or nightcap.
In the main building, the pub offers a convivial atmosphere with locally brewed ales, a snug featuring darts, a pool table, and a log burner. The dining room radiates rural charm with its vaulted timber ceilings and exposed stone walls, providing a perfect backdrop for the acclaimed cuisine. Under head chef Rob Mason, The Killingworth Castle boasts a coveted Michelin Guide recommendation, a third AA Rosette, and a place in the UK’s Top 50 Gastropubs for 2026.
I opted for the tasting menu, eager to experience the restaurant’s finest offerings. Each dish was a celebration of flavour and presentation, from the treacle bread served on wheat and barley to delicately balanced plates like Evesham asparagus with gribiche sauce and wild sea bass Grenobloise crowned with brown butter, capers, lemon, and parsley. The tender Cotswold lamb braised neck was unforgettable, melting effortlessly on the palate.
Dessert continued the journey, with a refreshing vanilla and rhubarb palate cleanser followed by a decadent chocolate delice featuring Hukambi milk chocolate, hazelnuts, and Cruz del Mar raisins. This memorable meal was both a delight for the senses and a testament to the culinary expertise at The Killy.
Breakfast was equally impressive — classic eggs Benedict with superbly vibrant egg yolks and crispy bacon served in an intimate setting where no guest had to rush or queue. Mornings began with a warm welcome from Jim, a comforting cup of coffee, and the gentle ambience of fellow guests enjoying the serene surroundings.
Rooms at The Killingworth Castle start from £169 per night midweek and £205 at weekends, with breakfast included. This exclusive retreat invites you to unwind and savour the best of the Cotswolds in comfort and style — a place where you truly won’t want to leave.
