I stayed at a stunning Cotswolds hotel that felt like a slice of Italy – and I never wanted to leave

Nestled in the heart of Oxfordshire’s idyllic countryside, The Killingworth Castle is a historic hotel and pub that instantly transports guests to another world. With only eight elegantly appointed bedrooms, this intimate boutique property feels more like an Italian retreat than a traditional English inn.

Set amid honey-toned stone buildings and meticulously tended gardens bursting with seasonal blooms, The Killingworth Castle enchants visitors with its unique blend of rustic farmhouse charm and refined luxury. Located in the quaint village of Wootton, just 30 minutes by car from Oxford’s historic center, it’s an ideal base for exploring the Cotswolds’ most captivating towns, including Burford, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Bibury. Nearby Woodstock – home to the famed Blenheim Palace – also beckons with rich history and stunning architecture.

Owned and run by husband-and-wife team Jim and Claire Alexander, the hotel envelops guests in warm hospitality from the moment they arrive. The fusion of cozy country character with boutique sophistication creates a welcoming sanctuary perfect for both exploration and relaxation. I felt immediately at home settling into one of the eight individually styled rooms housed in a whimsically converted stable block. Exposed beams, bare brick walls, and slanting ceilings evoke the pages of a fairy tale, while the rustic oak four-poster bed and alcove bath beneath a skylight add indulgent luxury.

Each room features carefully curated antique furnishings and thoughtful touches such as a complimentary English sherry on arrival – ideal for a pre-dinner toast or nightcap. Throughout my stay, the seamless blend of old-world charm and modern comfort made it tempting to linger long after plans to explore had been made.

The pub itself captures a timeless rural atmosphere. Upstairs, the bar serves locally brewed ales, and a snug common room invites guests to unwind with darts, pool, or cozy armchairs gathered around a log burner. The vaulted timber ceilings, exposed stone walls, and framed photography in the main dining room add to the quintessential countryside experience.

Under the expertise of head chef Rob Mason, the kitchen delivers an acclaimed menu featuring à la carte dishes, set lunches, Sunday roasts, and a celebrated tasting menu. This commitment to quality has earned The Killingworth Castle a Michelin Guide recommendation, its third AA Rosette, and a place in the UK’s Top 50 Gastropubs for 2026.

As a devoted food enthusiast, I eagerly chose the tasting menu to sample a range of inventive dishes. Each course presented a symphony of flavors that dazzled both the eye and the palate. Highlights included delicate hand-dived scallops paired with pork jowl and apple cider butter, and a masterful wild sea bass Grenobloise with brown butter sauce, capers, lemon, and parsley. The Cotswold lamb braised neck with peas, broad beans, goat’s curd, and malt vinegar stood out as an unforgettable finale to the savory offerings.

Desserts were equally impressive: a refreshing vanilla and rhubarb palate cleanser followed by a rich chocolate delice featuring Hukambi milk chocolate, hazelnuts, and Cruz del Mar raisins. The entire culinary journey was thoughtfully paired with an optional wine flight to elevate the experience.

Breakfast at The Killingworth Castle matched the evening’s excellence, with vibrant egg yolks crowning a classic eggs Benedict with bacon. The intimate size of the hotel ensured a relaxed, unhurried start to the day, with warm welcomes from Jim and the gentle hum of fellow guests setting a perfect tone.

Rooms start from £169 per night midweek and £205 at weekends, including breakfast. The tasting menu costs £95 per guest, with an optional wine pairing for £55, while a three-course à la carte meal is priced at £65.

Whether visiting for the celebrated cuisine, the serene setting, or the warm hospitality, The Killingworth Castle offers a countryside experience that feels both timeless and refreshingly unique. It’s a place you’ll want to return to—and reluctant to ever leave.
