I Had Brunch in a Tesco Cafe – The Price for a Family of Three is Unbelievable

Brits love a cosy café, drawn by the buzz of friendly chatter and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. For Tyler Mears, though, nothing beats finding a great deal. While she enjoys visiting independent cafés, Tyler recently discovered that her local Tesco café is impressing her in unexpected ways.

Traditionally, supermarket cafés haven’t been her go-to choice. She often found their food resembled uninspiring microwave meals, the coffee underwhelming, and the atmosphere lacking warmth. However, that changed last year when Tesco invested millions to transform many of its café spaces.

Gone are the days of plastic chairs and harsh lighting. Tesco’s revamped cafés now feature plush leather armchairs, greenery, soft lighting, and stylish décor, creating a welcoming environment.

Tyler, a new mum, explains why she’s now a Tesco café convert. “Since having a baby, I’ve spent a lot of time in cafés. It can be lonely as a new mum, so sitting in a lively café and chatting with strangers has been comforting. Plus, it’s a budget-friendly way to entertain my little one without needing a ball pit,” she told WalesOnline.

Living on maternity leave and mindful of expenses, Tyler has become a bargain-hunting expert. And she confirms, “There are some great bargains to be found in the Tesco café.”

On a recent visit with her partner and one-year-old, Tyler was pleased with the kids’ menu. “There’s plenty of choice for the little one – pancakes, yogurt, fruit, and toast. We went for the full kids’ breakfast at just £3.50 – less than a pack of nappies,” she smiled. “Later in the day, kids can enjoy pasta, fish fingers, or pizza with sides and a drink for only £4! Sometimes, kids even eat free with an adult meal.”

For adults, the menu offers family favourites like a full breakfast for £6.25, or eggs on toast and a sausage bap priced at £3.95. But Tesco is also stepping up its breakfast game with more sophisticated options such as Turkish eggs, bacon and chilli brioche, granola bowls, and toasted banana bread.

Tyler chose the sourdough toast topped with avocado, feta, sun-dried tomatoes, and eggs, finished with a balsamic drizzle, accompanied by a cappuccino. Her partner went for the Turkish eggs featuring lemon yogurt, spices, crispy onions, and toasted sourdough.

Although the food took a little time to arrive, Tyler didn’t mind. She enjoyed some quality moments with her family and the unique view above the shop floor. The café overlooks the entire store through a long glass balustrade, making it a haven for people-watching.

“When the meal arrived, it tasted genuinely good – not Michelin-starred cuisine, but definitely better than the usual supermarket fare,” Tyler said. “The poached eggs were runny, avocado fresh, and the balsamic gave a nice twist.”

Her daughter’s breakfast was a generous portion that she eagerly ate, and Tyler found her partner’s Turkish eggs unexpectedly delicious. “Eggs with yogurt sounds odd, but it strangely worked. And the coffee was strong, flavourful, and served hot.”

Their total bill for three people – two adults, one child, two coffees, and two bottles of water – was just over £25, which pleasantly surprised Tyler.

“In all, it was a delightful way to spend a few hours without breaking the bank,” she concluded.
