Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill expressed deep disappointment following his team’s 3-1 loss to Accrington Stanley. Reflecting on the game, Cotterill lamented the lack of fight and effort, especially in the opening stages.
“We train all week to play with intensity, but we only showed that in the last 15 or 20 minutes when the game was almost over. It’s hugely disappointing. I feel let down today,” he stated.
Cotterill was candid about the team’s overall approach: “Not enough players gave their all. Endeavour and fight are essentials in football; without them, you don’t win games. We lacked that from the start.”

While substitutions made an impact in the second half, Cotterill highlighted the efforts of debutants Josh Davison and Jake Bickerstaff. “Josh did well coming on, as did Jake in various attacking roles. Their performances were positives, but they weren’t enough to change the result,” he said.
The manager stressed that the responsibility to show fighting spirit lies with every member of the squad, not just experienced players. “Everyone has to commit—this was the longest stretch since I’ve been here without that determination. It’s unacceptable.”
Regarding transfer plans ahead of the January deadline, Cotterill remains hopeful but cautious. “We hope to bring in players to fill two loan spots. It’s been tougher this window because clubs are holding onto players longer than usual. We won’t be buying players outright, just tidying things up.”
Cotterill dismissed speculation around Isaac Hutchinson, emphasizing that Hutchinson is no longer a Cheltenham player and outside his jurisdiction.
Despite the setback, Cotterill remains committed to the club’s progress. “January has been tough, and rewards have been few, but we’ve already surpassed last season’s points at this stage. We’ll face bumps on the road, but I work hard every day to improve this team.”
He praised Davison’s commitment off the pitch as well: “Josh moving his family here shows his dedication. Having your support system close is a bonus, especially with the physical demands of football.”
Ultimately, Cotterill urged for more consistency and fight in future matches if Cheltenham are to turn their season around.
