‘I called Kate Middleton when she was in depths of despair - she showed her true colours’

Royal commentator Camilla Tominey has shared a striking memory of calling Kate Middleton at one of the most difficult times in her life—during the 2007 breakup with Prince William. On The Telegraph’s Royal T podcast, Camilla detailed how the future Princess of Wales answered the phone with unexpected poise and dignity, despite the emotional turmoil she was enduring.

At the time, Camilla was assigned by her news desk to cover reports about the couple’s split. Through mutual connections, she managed to get hold of Catherine’s phone number and decided to reach out. Introducing herself as a journalist from the Sunday Express, Camilla was surprised by Catherine’s polite and calm response.

When asked if she wished to make a statement about the breakup, Catherine replied firmly yet gracefully, “Listen, I haven’t ever commented about this relationship before. So, I don’t think I’m going to start now.” This candid but composed answer immediately earned Camilla’s respect.

Reflecting on the moment, Camilla said, “We all thought the relationship was over, and I thought, ‘Wow, what a class act.’ She could have been curt or rude but instead showed incredible serenity, especially given the circumstances.” Indeed, despite being in the depths of despair, Catherine handled the situation with remarkable dignity.

At the time, reports indicated that Prince William initiated the breakup via phone call. The relationship between William and Catherine, which began while they were students at the University of St Andrews, seemed to have ended for good. Yet later that same year, the couple reconciled—a reunion reportedly supported by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Their eventual engagement in 2010 and subsequent 2011 wedding at Westminster Abbey were widely celebrated milestones, solidifying their place as prominent members of the Royal Family. Today, as the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Catherine continue to carry out important royal duties while raising their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Camilla’s recollection shines a light on Catherine’s resilience and grace during one of the most challenging moments of her life, qualities that have come to define her public persona.
