I ate at Jeremy Clarkson’s Cotswolds pub and can sum it up in 1 word

Nestled just outside Burford in the picturesque Cotswolds, The Farmer’s Dog is a country pub owned by Jeremy Clarkson, dedicated to showcasing the best of British farming. Clarkson transformed this traditional pub into a refined destination focused on locally sourced meat and produce, championing the rich culinary heritage of the UK.

The pub’s ambiance perfectly matches its rural surroundings, with tasteful wooden decor and the iconic hanging tractor welcoming guests as they arrive. Since opening, The Farmer’s Dog has attracted attention not only for Clarkson’s celebrity but also because it ties in intimately with his television series, Clarkson’s Farm.

On the day I visited, a small Christmas market was taking place outside. While enjoyable, the market was a modest addition rather than the main attraction, a seasonal one-off event organized by Clarkson himself.

Inside, the atmosphere was cozy and vibrant, filled with the soft buzz of conversation and festive cheer—a warm contrast to the quiet exterior. The menu leans toward the premium side, reflecting the commitment to quality British sources and artisanal farmers whose names are proudly displayed on the walls.

The drink selection impressed me, with refreshing soft drinks alongside local Hawkstone lager and cider, both of which complemented the meal well.

I chose the turkey roast, priced at £26, served with roast potatoes, a pig in blanket, and seasonal greens. The portion was generous, the turkey perfectly cooked, juicy, and rich in flavor. For dessert, I enjoyed an apple and oat crumble cake (£12), served warm and light. Though on the expensive side for pudding, it was a comforting, homemade-style treat—I would have loved it paired with custard instead of ice cream on a chilly evening.

The pinnacle of the visit came with a chance encounter with Clarkson himself, adding a unique, personal touch to an already memorable evening.

If I had to describe the experience in one word, it would be “expensive” — but in a way that felt entirely warranted. Running such a venue with a dedication to exceptional ingredients and service naturally comes with higher costs, all of which were reflected in the experience.

The quality of food and service was outstanding, transforming the cost into what felt like a worthwhile, well-curated experience rather than an indulgence. Despite the sometimes lengthy waitlist, I highly recommend securing a table at The Farmer’s Dog for anyone visiting the Cotswolds.

The only thing I would have added to the meal was a Yorkshire pudding—an essential, in my opinion, to complete any traditional roast dinner.
