Huge Relief as Gloucester Day 2026 Celebration Secures Vital Funding

Gloucester Day 2026 is set to go ahead with a significant boost, as Gloucester City Council has pledged £3,500 to fund the cherished annual event commemorating the lifting of the Siege of Gloucester. This show of support brings relief to organisers and marks a rare moment of consensus among councillors of all parties.

The Gloucestershire city has a long history tied to this day, originally observed on September 5, 1643, when its citizens bravely withstood Royalist forces during the First English Civil War. The celebration continued for centuries before fading out in the 19th century, only to be revived in 2009. Since then, it has grown into a strong tradition, organised annually by town crier Alan Myatt and supported by the Civic Trust, Gloucester City Council, and the local business improvement district.

Alastair Chambers, a Community Independent councillor, successfully proposed the amendment to secure funding at last week’s budget meeting. The commitment has brought immense relief to the event’s dedicated organisers. Alan Myatt expressed heartfelt gratitude, emphasizing the event’s role in uniting Gloucester’s diverse communities, including Islamic, Christian, Ukrainian, and Jamaican residents.

“This funding takes away all the stress and anxiety,” said Myatt. “Gloucester Day brings the whole city together, showcasing its unity and spirit. It’s what Gloucester is really about.”

Despite personal challenges, Myatt remains deeply involved, promising to lead the parade again this year, whether on foot, mobility scooter, or his bicycle. He reflected on his 15-year commitment to resurrecting the event during difficult economic times, highlighting its cultural significance alongside the long-standing tradition of the Mock Mayor of Barton—an emblem of local civic identity and historical continuity.

“Over the years, Gloucester Day and the Mock Mayor pageant have brought so much joy and created lasting friendships,” he said. “I’m honoured to keep this tradition alive and to hold it all together for the city.”
