Huge Ofsted Turnaround for ‘Joyous’ Gloucester School

Grange Primary Academy, nestled in Tuffley, Gloucester, is celebrating a remarkable turnaround after receiving a ‘Good’ rating across all categories in its recent Ofsted inspection. This is a significant leap from the previous judgment of ‘Requires Improvement,’ showcasing the positive impact of dedicated changes within the school.

The latest inspection, conducted on June 3 and 4, 2025, marks a milestone in the school’s journey. After transitioning from the Phoenix Learning Alliance to the Greenshaw Learning Trust in November 2023, the school implemented targeted measures to address earlier concerns raised by Ofsted.

The inspection report highlights Grange Primary Academy as “a joyful place to learn, where pupils grow in confidence.” It praises the school’s high expectations, stating that pupils meet these standards with enthusiasm. However, it also notes ongoing challenges with attendance, particularly among disadvantaged pupils, stressing the importance of consistent attendance to support learning.

Greenshaw Learning Trust praised the school’s progress, remarking, “This marks a significant achievement for Grange Primary Academy, reflecting the impressive progress made in recent years under Headteacher Beth Williams' leadership. The school fosters a positive culture where pupils feel safe, supported, and valued.”

Headteacher Beth Williams expressed pride in the community’s efforts, saying, “This report recognizes the determination and care shown by staff, pupils, and families to create an environment where everyone is encouraged to be their best.”

The report also commended the school’s calm and purposeful classrooms, renewed curriculum, and strong support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), especially those in the Sycamore Class.

Early years provision stood out as a particular strength, with children receiving a carefully structured introduction to school life that enhances language, motor, and social skills. The school’s emphasis on vocabulary and speech development is making a tangible difference for those requiring additional support.

Liz Easaw, Director of Primary Education, congratulated the school on its remarkable transformation: “Beth and her team have created a school where children are supported, challenged, and inspired every day. This recognition from Ofsted is richly deserved.”

The report also highlighted the school’s commitment to personal development, with enrichment activities such as orienteering, zoo visits, and WWII workshops designed to build resilience, character, and a connection to the wider world. Pupils receive education on mental health, equality, and respect, fostering well-rounded growth.

Grange Primary Academy’s impressive Ofsted rating reflects its ongoing dedication to creating a joyful and effective learning environment for all its pupils.
