There’s nothing more frustrating than unloading your dishwasher only to find your glassware covered in a cloudy film, streaks, or spots. Instead of sparkling, the glasses look dull and dingy, and no amount of wiping seems to help.
This common problem often stems from mineral buildup caused by hard water, which deposits calcium and magnesium onto your glasses, leaving a hazy, milky residue. Thankfully, there’s a straightforward natural solution.
Whirlpool experts recommend first performing a simple spot test to determine the cause of the cloudiness. Using a cloth dipped in vinegar, gently rub the glass in a circular motion. If the film starts to lift, it’s mineral deposits from hard water — a fixable issue. However, if the cloudiness remains, your glasses may be etched due to detergent reactions with soft water, high temperatures, and low soil level, which unfortunately can’t be reversed.

For mineral buildup, soak your glasses on their sides in a bowl or sink filled with white vinegar for 15 minutes. After soaking, wash them by hand with warm water and dish soap, then dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent water spots from air drying.
To keep cloudiness at bay, use a rinse aid in your dishwasher and clean the machine regularly. If your glasses come out with scum, spots, or leftover food particles, check and clean the dishwasher filter, which can trap grease and debris. Running an empty hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack can help dissolve buildup inside the machine. For extra shine, add a few tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda to the bottom and run a short cycle.
Avoid overloading your dishwasher to ensure proper water circulation around glasses. Use a good-quality detergent and rinse aid to reduce residue and improve drying. Following these steps consistently will restore your glassware’s sparkle and keep it looking pristine.
