How Navigating Without GPS May Reduce Dementia Risk

Neurologist Dr. Baibing Chen, also known as Dr. Bing, suggests a straightforward exercise to enhance brain health and possibly reduce the risk of dementia. In a recent video, he recommends navigating without the use of GPS or a phone. Engaging in this practice can activate the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for navigation memory, spatial memory, and problem-solving skills.

Dr. Bing references scientific research indicating that individuals who frequently navigate complex routes, such as taxi drivers, often have larger hippocampi, which may be linked to a decreased likelihood of developing dementia. These findings suggest that periodically challenging oneself to navigate without technological aids can be beneficial for brain health.

In addition to navigating without GPS, the NHS recommends other lifestyle adjustments to reduce dementia risk, including maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, managing blood pressure, and staying socially engaged.
