House for Sale in ‘Idyllic’ Location Actually Sits Directly Underneath the M5

A two-bedroom house in Somerset has become an unexpected internet sensation, but not for the reasons the seller might have hoped. Listed for £475,000, this compact home sits literally underneath the M5 motorway, a detail that has stirred strong reactions online.

The property, located on Clevedon Lane between Clevedon and Portishead, was featured in a viral TikTok video by Jack Bushrod on the Housing Horrors account. His stunned reaction captured the public’s imagination: “People, the bloody M5 is directly above it,” he exclaimed. “I’ve never seen anything quite like this in my entire life.”

Despite the area’s undeniable charm and picturesque setting, Bushrod pointed out the major downside: the noise. “The sound of the M5 must be absolutely excruciating,” he noted, adding, “I’m sorry, but there is no way on Earth this is worth £475,000.” He emphasized that while the interior of the home was appealing, its location beneath a busy motorway was an overwhelming drawback.

Estate agents have acknowledged this unusual aspect of the sale in the property description, explaining that a portion of the land under the M5 viaduct is part of the sale via a “creeping freehold” arrangement. This means the property extends beneath an existing structure — in this case, the motorway — but that land is not included in the house sale.

Public reaction was mixed but largely critical. Some viewers expressed fears about safety and noise, with comments such as, “I would live in constant irrational fear that a car would land on my house,” and “Surely sleep is impossible.” However, others who had experience living near busy roads or motorways were less concerned. One noted, “Being an old, solid-walled house, you probably wouldn’t get too much noise from it. We live on an A road in an old place and while you can hear the road, it’s not really a problem.” Another shared, “I live next to the M3 and you can’t really hear it as it’s high up.”

In conclusion, while the house offers a scenic location in the West Country, its unique position directly under a major motorway has sparked controversy — and skepticism over whether it justifies the sizeable price tag.
