Patients facing extended hospital stays in Gloucestershire are now able to virtually visit iconic local sites like Gloucester Cathedral, Puzzlewood, and Symonds Yat, or immerse themselves in a rugby match experience—all through virtual reality (VR) headsets. Hospital leaders recognize that lengthy inpatient periods can challenge patients’ sense of independence and overall well-being.
To combat feelings of isolation and loss of freedom, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has launched a pioneering VR trial aiming to offer patients a comforting sense of escape and connection. Using breathtaking 360-degree videos filmed throughout the county, patients can revisit cherished destinations, discover new ones, or simply enjoy the calming familiarity of local landmarks—all from the comfort of their hospital beds.
The initiative strives to bring moments of joy, tranquility, and renewal to those who might otherwise feel cut off from the world. “We have already crafted a collection showcasing stunning local attractions and are collaborating with regional businesses and organizations to broaden our content library,” a Trust spokesperson explained.

Current partnerships include Puzzlewood, Dean Forest Railway, and the Bristol Zoo Project, with plans to add iconic sites such as Gloucester Cathedral and Gloucester Rugby in the near future. The trial is presently offered to patients in oncology and critical care departments across Gloucestershire Hospitals.
Hospital staff are optimistic about the positive impact this technology could have on patient morale and recovery. The program emphasizes careful patient selection through strict inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure safety and effectiveness, with informed consent required.
This VR initiative represents a meaningful step toward enhancing the patient experience, transforming hospital stays into opportunities for uplifting moments and a sense of being closer to home.
