Essential gas pipe upgrades near Nailsworth will result in temporary traffic management on Horsley Hill, Horsley, lasting nearly two months.
Wales & West Utilities is investing over £7.5 million to modernise gas infrastructure across Gloucestershire, including areas such as Stroud, Chalford, Minchinhampton, and Nailsworth, over the course of the next two years.
Starting Monday, 7 September, work will begin on the latest phase in the Horsley Hill area. The project aims to conclude by 5 November, if schedules are met. Throughout this period, traffic management measures, including multi-way traffic lights, will be in operation.

Initially, three-way traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Horsley Hill and Narrowcut Lane near The Hog pub within the village of Horsley. As work advances along Horsley Hill, these will be reduced to two-way lights. There may also be brief road closures, though these are expected to be of short duration. Motorists are advised to plan for potential delays and allow extra travel time.
This gas pipe replacement is crucial to maintain a safe and reliable supply of gas to local homes and businesses, ensuring residents stay warm for decades ahead.
Across the wider programme, Wales & West Utilities will upgrade nearly 26 kilometres of gas mains, enhancing energy infrastructure for around 2,600 customers in the area.
Ryan Barkway, project manager at Wales & West Utilities, emphasised the company’s commitment to keeping the community informed. He said: “We aim to update the local community on progress as we upgrade our gas network to ensure safety, reliability, and future resilience for our customers in the area.
“We are working closely with local authorities and will keep communities informed as projects are planned and delivered. While we understand these works may cause some disruption, they are essential to maintain a gas network households and businesses can rely on daily.
“Though much of the gas network operates out of sight, it is vital for everyday life – from heating homes to cooking meals – and we recognise its importance to the community.”
