Cheltenham Town is set to welcome back one of its most revered icons this Saturday, as legendary centre-forward Neil Grayson returns to Whaddon Road for the club’s final 2025/26 home game against Colchester United (kick-off at 3pm).
At 61, Grayson faces a challenging journey after a recent dementia diagnosis. In response, the club and supporters have rallied to organise fundraising efforts before, during, and after the match to assist with his ongoing care.
Joining Grayson will be several members of the celebrated 1999 Conference-winning squad, alongside other former stars who helped shape Cheltenham Town’s rich history.

Grayson’s impact at the club is profound. He joined Cheltenham from Hereford United in March 1998 and quickly made his mark by becoming the team’s top scorer. His goals were instrumental in securing promotion to the Football League for the first time in April 1999 under manager Steve Cotterill.
Memorable moments include his match-winning goals in the electrifying 2-1 comeback against title rivals Rushden & Diamonds and the dramatic 3-2 victory over Yeovil Town that clinched the title—ushering full-time football to Gloucestershire.
His accolades speak volumes: Supporters’ Player of the Year at Whaddon Road and Non-League Player of the Year honours highlight his standing in the game.
Grayson also scored Cheltenham’s first-ever EFL goal—a powerful header against Mansfield Town in August 1999—and finished as the club’s top scorer for the following two seasons. He played a pivotal role in the 2001/02 play-off promotion campaign, helping the Robins reach the third tier.
His final game for Cheltenham was marked by a memorable moment at the Millennium Stadium, when his fierce shot rattled the post before John Finnigan sealed a 3-1 victory over Rushden & Diamonds. That day secured Cotterill’s third promotion in five years—a fitting finale to Grayson’s Robins tenure.
After leaving Cheltenham, Grayson’s passion for football never waned. He continued to compete at various non-league clubs, including Forest Green Rovers and Stafford Rangers, playing well into his 50s with unwavering dedication.
This Saturday, Grayson will be honoured with a lap of the Whaddon Road pitch at half-time, joined by fellow former players, as fans pay tribute to a true club legend.
