HMRC Urges Early Filing as Over 290,000 Complete Tax Returns Ahead of Deadline

More than 290,000 taxpayers have already filed their Self Assessment tax returns just days into the new financial year, prompting HMRC to highlight the advantages of early submission. The tax authority praised these individuals for being “quick off the mark” and encouraged others to follow suit to benefit from a smoother process.

Filing early allows taxpayers to gain clarity on their tax liabilities well before the January 31, 2027 deadline. This early insight helps households manage their budgets more effectively and may reveal eligibility for tax refunds.

One significant advantage of submitting returns early is avoiding the frantic rush that typically occurs at the end of January, when millions of taxpayers try to meet the deadline simultaneously.

HMRC emphasized, “Filing early has a range of benefits, including discovering what you owe sooner to plan ahead, identifying any overpaid tax for refunds, and reducing last-minute stress.”

Although returns can be submitted anytime from April 6—marking the start of the new tax year—taxpayers are reminded that paying any owed tax is not required until the January 31 deadline. However, failing to file on time can lead to penalties.

Self-employed individuals and those with additional income sources, such as rental income or untaxed earnings, must submit Self Assessment returns. HMRC’s online platform provides a convenient way to file returns, review past submissions, track outstanding payments, and manage tax affairs efficiently.

First-time filers should note the necessity of registering with HMRC before submitting their return. More complex cases, including trusts and partnerships, require specific filing procedures.

By acting early, taxpayers can reduce stress, get ahead on financial planning, and avoid costly mistakes near the deadline.
