HMRC Update: Over 290,000 Submit Tax Returns Early Amid Deadline Reminder

More than 290,000 taxpayers have already submitted their Self Assessment tax returns within days of the new financial year beginning, as HMRC highlights the benefits of filing early and reminds others of upcoming deadlines.

The tax authority applauded those who were “quick off the mark” in completing their returns and encouraged more people to file sooner rather than later. Early submission provides households with a clearer understanding of their financial obligations well ahead of the January 31, 2027, payment deadline.

By filing early, taxpayers can determine what they owe in advance, plan their budgets more effectively, and potentially discover if they are due a tax refund. It also helps avoid the rush and stress of the traditional January deadline period when millions submit returns last minute.

HMRC stated: “Filing early has numerous advantages, including knowing your tax bill earlier to plan accordingly, identifying any overpaid tax to claim a refund, and steering clear of last-minute pressure.”

While many have already filed, HMRC reminds taxpayers that the payment deadline remains January 31, 2027. Early submission does not require immediate payment, but late filing can lead to penalties.

Self Assessment returns for the tax year may be submitted anytime from April 6 following the end of the tax year, giving self-employed individuals and those with additional income ample time to comply.

Those required to file include self-employed workers and individuals with income from sources such as rental properties or other untaxed earnings. HMRC’s online system offers a convenient way to complete returns, review past submissions, track payments, and manage tax details in one place.

First-time filers are advised to register with HMRC before submitting their returns. Some complex situations, such as trusts and partnerships, require different filing processes.
