Historic Sudeley Castle Reopens with Spectacular Gardens and Easter Events

Sudeley Castle & Gardens, a stunning historic landmark nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, has officially reopened for the season. Located on the edge of the charming market town of Winchcombe, the castle is set within 1,000 acres of breathtaking countryside and offers visitors a rich blend of history, nature, and family entertainment.

The castle, once home to Henry VIII’s last wife, Queen Katherine Parr, is famed for its 10 distinct gardens, each promising a spectacular floral display throughout spring. Among these, the Tudor Physic Garden is reopening for the first time since the pandemic. This unique garden showcases medicinal plants historically used during the Tudor era, offering visitors an immersive glimpse into the past.

Behind the scenes, the Sudeley team has spent the winter meticulously conserving and maintaining the castle’s historic furnishings, woodwork, and treasured artifacts, ensuring that every room tells its story with authenticity and care.

Seasonal highlights include welcoming new volunteers, who play an essential role in enriching the visitor experience by sharing the castle’s fascinating heritage.

Families visiting over the Easter holidays can join in delightful adventures, including a golden egg trail through the gardens that culminates in discovering a giant hare and a tasty Easter treat. Additionally, a special Easter show runs from Good Friday to Easter Monday, featuring Queen Elizabeth I and her travelling court. This entertaining performance blends drama, humor, Tudor mischief, and audience participation, retelling the amusing tale of Winchcombe bakers and their “illicit” hot cross buns.

Springtime at Sudeley is a floral spectacle, with over 5,000 tulips bursting into glorious bloom throughout April and May. Garden borders are adorned with fragrant hyacinths, bright narcissus, soft cyclamen, elegant fritillaria, and early gladiolus, delivering a kaleidoscope of colors and scents.

From April 23 to May 5, Giffords Circus will add to the enchantment with its new show, Waterfield, performed on the castle grounds. Visitors can also explore Sudeley’s historic exhibitions, magnificent castle rooms, and the chapel, which houses the final resting place of Queen Katherine Parr.

Sudeley Castle invites all to immerse themselves in its rich heritage, serene gardens, and lively seasonal celebrations this spring.
