Historic Pub ‘The Goat’ Nominated for Protected Status

The former Globe Inn, now known as The Goat, has been nominated for inclusion on the Register of Assets of Community Value by the Stonehouse Town Council. The move aims to safeguard the pub’s future and its significance to the town.

Located at 43 High Street, The Goat, a community institution dating back centuries, has been a vital gathering place for generations. Historical records trace its existence to at least 1810, with the venue having played a significant role in the town’s history, hosting public meetings and decisions.

Facing challenges emblematic of the wider decline in the hospitality sector, The Goat has recently experienced periods of vacancy and closures. The Town Council’s concern about the sustainability of community pubs is underscored by the submission, citing alarming closure statistics and the dwindling number of pubs in Stonehouse.

The nomination emphasizes the cultural and recreational significance of the venue, noting its role in providing a vital space for social interaction and as a community’s “third space”. The Town Council has submitted the nomination on behalf of the community, underscoring the importance of greater protection for the future of The Goat.

If successfully listed, The Goat would receive added protection under the Localism Act, including a moratorium on any sale, allowing community groups the opportunity to prepare a bid should the owner decide to dispose of the property.

Stroud District Council now has up to eight weeks to decide whether to add the building to the official list of community assets. If successful, The Goat would remain on the register for five years, with the option for future re-nomination. Owners have the right to appeal the decision within that timeframe.
