Historic 12th Century Gloucester Priory Awarded £235,000 Grant to Secure Future

The Llanthony Secunda Priory, an iconic Augustinian priory dating back to 1136, has been awarded a £235,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to further preserve and protect its nearly 900 years of rich history.

Located in Gloucester, this historic site is managed by the Llanthony Secunda Priory Trust, which previously secured a substantial £3.2 million grant in 2016 for extensive restoration. That project revitalized key areas including the Medieval Range, Victorian Farmhouse, and Brick Range, along with landscaped grounds, leading to the priory’s reopening in 2018.

Eight years later, the Trust has received additional funding as part of the “Llanthony Secunda Priory: Resilient and Sustainable” initiative. This new grant, spread over three years, is designed to support ongoing management, preservation, and engagement efforts, ensuring the priory’s heritage continues to inspire future generations.

A key focus of the grant is hiring a Chief Executive to lead a refreshed organizational structure, drive staff and volunteer development, and implement new fundraising strategies. Investments will also be made in digital improvements, including a new website and ticketing system, as well as enhancing marketing and audience interaction.

The funds will support ongoing income streams through events, weddings, and venue hires, while enabling further site development. Plans include restoration and reuse of the remaining historic buildings and revitalization of canal-side land, cementing the priory’s sustainable future.

Paul James, Chair of Trustees at Llanthony Secunda Priory, expressed gratitude for the funding, acknowledging the dedication of the trust and community partners who helped secure it. Stuart McLeod, Director England – London & South at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, praised the project’s role in ensuring the site’s long-term resilience and sustainability, highlighting the importance of adapting heritage organizations for the future.
