A brave couple from Wales have been hailed as heroes for saving six people—including an infant—after a boat exploded on the River Thames. Josh Hobbs, 35, and Hannah Lloyd-Hobbs, 34, acted immediately when they witnessed the blaze, diving into the water to rescue four children and two adults.
The couple, from Rhayader in Powys, were enjoying a holiday walk near Lechlade along the Wiltshire-Oxfordshire border with their dog on Saturday, May 31, when the incident unfolded. Josh recalled the moment vividly: “We were less than 10 minutes into our walk, about 100 meters from the river, when an almighty bang shook the air around us.”
Initially mistaking the noise for a celebration, the couple quickly realized the situation was dire when they heard terrified screams from the boat. Racing to the scene, they found the vessel adrift and engulfed in flames. Many onboard couldn’t swim, but Josh and Hannah encouraged them to jump into the river as the safer option.

As people leapt into the water, Hannah immediately dove in to retrieve an 18-month-old baby, while Josh coordinated efforts to help others. “I had four people hanging off me at one point,” Josh said, recalling the desperate struggle to keep everyone afloat. His quick thinking and determination helped get the children and adults safely to shore.
The explosion was heard for miles, prompting other bystanders to assist until emergency services arrived. Wiltshire Police confirmed that five adults and four children, aged between 18 months and seven years, ended up in the water. Nine people were hospitalized, with three remaining stable but seriously injured, including the infant who suffered potentially life-altering burns.
Detective Superintendent Joe Garrity praised the couple’s heroic bravery: “It is a miracle there were no fatalities, and much of that must be credited to these two holidaymakers who selflessly jumped into the Thames to save lives.”
Authorities conducted a thorough investigation and have since lifted the safety cordon around the area. Meanwhile, Josh and Hannah have remained in contact with the police and expressed their hope for the full recovery of the affected families.
“We just did what anyone would in that moment,” Josh said. Hannah added, “We hope the families are doing okay and wish them a speedy recovery.”
