Helen Skelton Opens Up About Leaving Her ‘Dream BBC Job’ Amid Personal Challenges

Helen Skelton has candidly shared the emotional struggle behind her decision to leave what she called her “dream job” at the BBC. In 2023, the 42-year-old announced her departure from her Sunday slot on BBC Radio 5 Live, a role she embraced for just one year.

At the time, Helen told her fans that “the juggle is real,” highlighting the challenge of managing a demanding broadcasting schedule alongside raising her three children. The presenter, who went through a public split from rugby player Richie Myler in 2022, is now co-parenting their three young kids.

Reflecting on her departure during a February appearance on Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast, Helen admitted the decision was difficult but necessary. “It was the dream job in a million and one ways,” she said, describing her love for live radio and how privileged she felt to work at the BBC.

The weekend sports show perfectly blended her interests, allowing her to engage with sport and journalism—a field she appreciates but humbly notes she isn’t a traditional journalist. “This show managed to straddle all of that,” she explained. “I worked with some of the best people in the business, who are also my friends—it was jackpot on every level.”

Conveniently located close to home, the role was rare in Helen’s busy life and made the decision to leave even harder. “I felt like I’d worked towards that job for a long time,” she acknowledged.

Though she hadn’t intended to make a big announcement at the time of her exit, Helen felt it important to share her reasons when prompted by her co-host, emphasizing the close-knit environment they had built. “We were like a little family, and it was really hard to walk away.”

Since leaving Radio 5 Live, Helen has continued her work as a familiar face on BBC’s Morning Live, co-hosting the show from Monday to Wednesday alongside presenters like Gethin Jones. She also remains active in other BBC projects including Countryfile, On the Farm, Lost and Found in the Lakes, and the new series Springtime on the Farm, which highlights the work of agricultural communities across the UK.

Helen’s journey illustrates the complex balance many face between personal life and career, and her openness offers a relatable perspective on difficult professional choices.
