As Cheltenham braces for temperatures soaring up to 30°C starting Monday, the town’s bin collection schedule is being adjusted to help manage the heat. Collection teams will begin their rounds at 6 a.m., an hour earlier than the usual 7 a.m., to ensure safety and efficiency during the hot spell.
This earlier start time will remain in effect throughout the week and will be used during any future periods of high temperatures over the summer.
Councillor Steve Harvey, Cheltenham Borough Council’s cabinet member for waste, recycling, and green spaces, explained, “Due to the hot weather, our waste and recycling crews will start their collections earlier to protect both the teams and the vehicles from the heat. We ask residents to have their recycling boxes, food caddies, refuse, and garden bins ready at the kerbside by 6 a.m.”

He added, “Our crews will do their best to minimize noise during these earlier hours to avoid disturbing residents.”
The Met Office forecast for the South West region warns of very high temperatures on Monday and Tuesday, with potential widespread impacts on people and infrastructure. Warm nights and humid conditions are expected, especially in urban areas. While the heat may persist into midweek in some places, there is some uncertainty about how widespread it will be.
Normal bin collection times will resume on Monday, 29 June 2026.
