Heatwave Prompts Earlier Bin Collections in Cheltenham

As temperatures soar to 30°C starting Monday, Cheltenham has moved bin collection times earlier to help crews and vehicles cope with the heat. Collection rounds will now begin at 6 a.m. instead of the usual 7 a.m.

This schedule adjustment will remain in place throughout the week and will be implemented during any future hot weather periods this summer.

Councillor Steve Harvey, Cheltenham Borough Council’s cabinet member for waste, recycling, and green open spaces, explained: “Due to the hot weather, our waste and recycling collections will start earlier to protect our crews and ensure collections are completed on time. Residents should place their recycling boxes, food caddies, refuse, and garden bins at the kerbside by 6 a.m.”

He added, “Our teams will strive to minimize noise while collecting earlier in the morning.”

The Met Office forecast for the southwest region warns of very high temperatures on Monday and Tuesday, with widespread impacts expected on people and infrastructure. Overnight temperatures will remain warm, particularly in urban areas, with humid conditions persisting. The intense heat may continue into midweek, though there is some uncertainty regarding its extent.

Normal collection times are set to resume on Monday, 29 June 2026.
