Derek East, affectionately known as “Ego,” a treasured Gloucester rugby legend and devoted family man, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2024, at the age of 80. Diagnosed with bowel cancer just three months earlier on April 2, his loss has deeply affected all who knew him. Born and raised in Gloucester, Derek was celebrated not only for his dedication to rugby but also for his unwavering love for his family and community.
Derek proudly played two seasons as a hooker for Gloucester Rugby from 1967 to 1969 before continuing his sporting journey with Tredworth RFC. Although he stepped away from professional play to support his family, his passion for the sport never waned. He later devoted time coaching under-16 youth teams, sharing his love and knowledge of rugby to inspire the next generation.
A true Gloucester native, Derek attended Linden Secondary School and married his beloved wife Gill, who passed away in 2015. Together, they raised three children: Jeff, now residing in Canada at 62; Mandy, 57; and Simon, 53, both living in Gloucester. Derek was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren, who fondly recall his warmth, generosity, and joyful spirit.

His career was as grounded as his character. From working on road repairs throughout Gloucestershire to serving as an electrical engineer at Gillmans and later as a maintenance operative for Gloucester City Council, Derek was a dedicated and hardworking individual who valued his community ties.
Mandy Vernon poignantly reflects on her father’s life: “Dad was a brilliant father and uncle, always taking us on day trips—whether to Robinswood Hill, Stroud, or the lido. Family was everything to him. He was happiest with all of us together, sharing holidays in Bream and Devon and savoring his renowned roast dinners and homemade chili. His Christmas dinners were unforgettable—something I never missed.”
Derek’s impact extended beyond family and sport into the wider community of Tredworth, where he was a well-respected and beloved figure. “He lived and breathed rugby, and though the sport was amateur in his day, his commitment never faltered. His community remembers him with great affection,” Mandy added.
A funeral service to honor Derek East will be held on July 4 at midday at St Barnabas Church on Stroud Road, Gloucester. Friends, family, and all who knew Derek are warmly invited to attend and celebrate a life full of heart, passion, and generosity.
