Barbara Mullaney, a cherished local pet shop owner, has tragically lost her life in a head-on collision on the B4696 near Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire. Authorities are treating the incident as a suspected murder.
Ms. Mullaney, who ran the Animal Fayre pet shop on Cricklade High Street, was pronounced dead at the scene on the evening of June 30. The community’s grief is deeply felt, with dozens of floral tributes left in her memory outside the shop.
Friends and neighbors have shared heartfelt messages, remembering Barbara as a warm, caring, and vibrant woman who always had time for a chat. One tribute read, “Auntie Barb was such a lovely, caring vibrant lady. She will be greatly missed. RIP Barbara.” Another expressed prayers for her family and acknowledged the profound loss felt by many.

The overwhelming support from the Cricklade community has been a source of comfort for Ms. Mullaney’s family. They expressed their gratitude on social media, stating, “Words can’t describe the devastation. The shop is bedecked with such an array of flowers. Barbara was loved by more people than we ever imagined.”
Wiltshire Police reported that the crash involved an orange Peugeot 107 and a black Vauxhall Astra heading in opposite directions. The female driver of the Peugeot, in her 70s, died at the scene. A teenage passenger in the Vauxhall sustained serious injuries but was discharged from hospital.
The driver of the Vauxhall, a 43-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Following treatment in hospital, he is now in police custody. Due to prior interactions with the suspect, the police have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, leading the investigation, conveyed his condolences: “My thoughts continue to be with the victim’s family and all who knew her. We are providing them with ongoing support as the inquiry progresses.”
