A representative for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has addressed claims suggesting the couple were ‘colluding’ with Earl Spencer following the release of his book, Swan Song, which offers critical perspectives on King Charles III and reflects on the life of his sister, Diana, Princess of Wales.
In his publication, Earl Spencer makes serious allegations regarding King Charles’s behaviour after Diana’s death, accusing him of acting like a “lottery winner” and asserting that the King reportedly said the world would “soon enough” forget Diana. The Royal Household has responded, emphasising that grief can “cloud” memories, thus defending the King against these assertions.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, speaking to The News, remarked on the widespread attention the book has garnered. He said, “They (Harry and Meghan) will be absolutely thrilled by the fact that this has gone viral, that the Palace put out an angry statement denying that King Charles has said his ex-wife should be forgotten soon enough.”

Fitzwilliams reflected on the context of the claims, noting, “One has to bear in mind that this was nearly 30 years ago. Individuals may or may not have said certain things that they look at in a different context now.”
While acknowledging the significant publicity Earl Spencer’s book has attracted, Fitzwilliams added, “It’s very damaging for the King.”
He further suggested there might be a close association between Harry, Meghan and Earl Spencer, stating, “In my opinion there was collusion between them because they’ve been close for a long time. This is very damaging. I hope it doesn’t impair long-term views of both the monarchy and the King.”
However, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has categorically denied any such collusion, calling the claims false in comments to the Express. Despite their familial connection to Earl Spencer, Harry and Meghan are reportedly making efforts to repair their previously strained relationship with King Charles, which has experienced difficulties in recent years.
