‘Hard to put into words’ – Joint boss Michael Palmer on Slimbridge Hellenic League title success

Slimbridge clinched the Hellenic League Premier Division title with an exhilarating 3-2 comeback victory over Tuffley Rovers on Easter Monday, securing the championship with two games to spare.

Goals from captain Charlie Hitchings, Alex Bell, and Jacob Rodgers delivered a landmark win for the Swans, marking their first league triumph since the 2006/07 season. This achievement paves the way for their return to the Southern League after a three-year hiatus.

Joint manager Michael Palmer described the moment as “hard to put into words,” expressing his gratitude and pride. “Coming into my first season, expectations were modest — our aim was simply to improve and aim for the playoffs. To rise from 16th place and win the league, when few saw us as contenders, is an immense accomplishment,” he said.

The match itself was a rollercoaster, as Slimbridge overturned a 2-1 halftime deficit during the fiercely contested derby at Glevum Park. Palmer praised his team’s resilience and belief, saying, “We’ve faced adversity before this season and always found a way back. At halftime, the message was clear: stay positive and trust in our capabilities.”

As results from other matches filtered in, the team focused on controlling what they could while maintaining conviction in their performance. “When promotion was confirmed, the celebrations among players, staff, and supporters were truly surreal—a rewarding culmination of hard work.”

Returning to step four football, where Slimbridge thrived for eight consecutive seasons from 2015 following their Western League promotion, Palmer highlighted the club’s excitement. “There’s a real buzz around Thornhill Park. This is where the club feels it belongs, and everyone—from the chairman to the committee—has been clear about that vision,” he stated.

Palmer also credited his partnership with co-manager Tom Deakin and assistant coaches Sam Prior and Ben Powell for cultivating a positive, collaborative environment. “Tom and I share a football philosophy that has strengthened our leadership. Working alongside Ben and Sam, who bring invaluable perspectives, has been a fantastic learning experience.”

Ultimately, Palmer attributed the title success to the players’ unwavering commitment. “Their talent, attitude, and togetherness have been exceptional. The squad embraced everything we asked, maintaining resilience in tough moments. Their dedication and consistency laid the foundation for this incredible season.”
