Green Party Retains Stroud District Council Seat in By-Election

Helen Elliott-Boult, the newly elected Green Party councillor, expressed her excitement and gratitude after winning the Stroud District Council by-election for the Thrupp ward at Ebley Mill. This election followed the resignation of fellow Green councillor Beki Aldam.

Elliott-Boult secured a commanding victory with 540 votes, surpassing Reform UK candidate Michael Rees, who received 132 votes. Other candidates included Conservative Anthony Philip William Pilkington with 58 votes, Labour’s Mick Fealty with 46, Liberal Democrat Raffy Chiswick with 22, and UKIP’s Lucian Aeris with just two votes. Voter turnout stood at 41.3%.

Speaking about the win, Cllr Elliott-Boult said, “I’m absolutely delighted and eager to begin serving this wonderful community. I want to thank everyone who voted and the dedicated local Green team whose support made this possible."

She highlighted the significance of the result: “Winning by such a large margin, especially against five other candidates, and increasing the Green vote share beyond previous years, is incredibly encouraging. I also received more than four times as many votes as the Reform UK candidate."

Elliott-Boult sees this success as part of a broader trend: “Following the recent Green victory with Hannah Spencer in the Gorton and Denton parliamentary by-election, it’s clear that voters are rejecting politics of division. Instead, they’re embracing hope through a party committed to inclusivity and genuine community engagement — the Green Party."

The current council composition stands at 24 Green councillors, 17 Labour and Co-operative, six Conservatives, two Liberal Democrats, and two Independents.
