In light of the recent high-profile media deal between ITV and Sky, Channel 4 has swiftly addressed rumours concerning the future of The Great British Bake Off. The speculation arose after ITV announced a deal to sell its media and entertainment division to Sky in a transaction valued at up to £1.6 billion.
This significant agreement includes ITV’s terrestrial TV channels and its streaming service, ITVX, but notably excludes ITV Studios—the production arm behind major shows such as I’m A Celebrity and Mr Bates Vs The Post Office. Post-sale, ITV Studios will become a standalone global content company, publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange, while also establishing a long-term content supply partnership with the combined ITV-Sky entity.
Given that ITV will acquire Love Productions, the creators of The Great British Bake Off, some assumed the show might migrate from Channel 4 back to ITV. However, Channel 4 has confirmed this is not the case. A spokesperson for Channel 4 and Love Productions told The Telegraph: “Channel 4’s GBBO deal is with Love and as such is unaffected by the Sky ITV deal.”

They further clarified, “The show’s existing multi-year agreement with Love remains in place, meaning Bake Off fans can continue to enjoy the show on Channel 4 as usual.”
Sky, which is owned by Comcast, is concurrently pursuing plans to restructure, with its European business expected to integrate into NBCUniversal. Sky’s group chief executive, Dana Strong, expressed enthusiasm about the deal, highlighting that the merger would combine free-to-air TV, pay TV, and streaming to deliver outstanding British content to UK audiences. ITV chairman Andrew Cosslett echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ITV’s role as a public service broadcaster and boosting its competitiveness against global streaming giants.
For now, Bake Off fans can rest assured that their favourite baking show will remain a Channel 4 staple for the foreseeable future.
