Grandma Seriously Injured After Mobility Scooter Crashes Into Deep Pothole

An 88-year-old widow, Pat Lowe, endured a painful and frightening ordeal when her mobility scooter plunged into a deep, water-filled pothole during a dog walk in Viney Hill, Gloucestershire. The scooter flipped over, pinning her beneath it for around ten minutes before she could free herself.

Pat had carefully pulled onto a muddy verge on Church Walk to let a large vehicle pass when she attempted to return to the road and unknowingly drove into the severe pothole. The accident left her with a large, painful wound on her elbow—so severe that a flap of skin was hanging loose. She immediately called for help, but nearby residents, reportedly watching a rugby match, did not hear her cries.

Emergency services treated her at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, where she spent five hours receiving care. Due to swelling, doctors could not stitch the wound, which is expected to take up to two months to heal. She now requires frequent dressing changes and has been left with limited mobility, unable to perform simple tasks like dressing or showering by herself.

Pat described the road conditions as the worst she has ever seen, with numerous deep potholes filled with rainwater, making them difficult to spot. She criticized the slow and incomplete response from local authorities, noting that only the potholes near her accident were repaired after her report, leaving others a continued hazard.

A local council spokesperson expressed sympathy and confirmed inspections and repairs were underway, emphasizing ongoing challenges in addressing the winter damage. Pat is contemplating legal action as she recovers from an accident that highlights the critical need for road maintenance, especially for vulnerable road users like those dependent on mobility scooters.
