GP Urges Dietary Changes to Combat Rising ‘Superflu’ Cases

Recent figures released by the NHS reveal a concerning surge in flu hospitalizations across the UK, with cases of “superflu” accelerating rapidly. Hospital admissions for flu have increased by 55% in just one week, averaging 2,660 patients daily—the highest for this time of year. Health officials warn that numbers continue to climb sharply with no signs of slowing down.

Compounding the challenge, norovirus cases in hospitals have also risen by 35%, placing additional strain on NHS services already stretched by seasonal demand. This dual outbreak highlights the urgent need for effective preventive measures to protect public health during the winter months.

Dr. Dave Nichols, an NHS GP and Resident Doctor for MyHealthChecked, stresses the importance of dietary choices in maintaining a strong immune system. “Good health depends on a balanced intake of a variety of nutrients rather than focusing on single vitamins,” he explains. “Eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily ensures adequate levels of vitamins A, C, and D, while increasing omega-3 intake is also beneficial. Protein-rich foods support cell and muscle recovery, especially when you are feeling unwell.”

Emerging research points to additional benefits from probiotics in reducing respiratory infections and zinc supplementation in boosting immune defense.

To help identify individual nutritional needs, MyHealthChecked offers a testing kit available at Boots. This kit assesses genetic risks for key nutrient deficiencies such as vitamin D, vitamin C, iron, and B12, all of which can increase vulnerability to illness during winter.

Dr. Nichols also advises being alert to symptoms that might indicate vitamin deficiencies as part of a proactive approach to health this season.
