GP Explains NHS 9-Minute Rule and What Happens If You’re Late to Your Appointment

Booking a GP appointment through the NHS can often feel like a challenging task due to high demand and limited availability, despite recent efforts to improve access. When you do secure an appointment, arriving on time becomes just as important as obtaining the slot itself.

Dr Basha Mukherjee, a GP with over 52,000 Instagram followers, has shed light on the NHS’s strict nine-minute late arrival rule. According to her, if patients arrive more than nine minutes late, their appointment may be cancelled and marked as a ‘did not attend’ (DNA). This policy isn’t meant to deter patients but is essential for keeping the clinical schedule fair and efficient.

In her explanation, Dr Mukherjee described the daily pressure GPs face managing tightly packed appointments. A single late arrival can disrupt the entire day, causing delays and stress for both doctors and other patients waiting to be seen.

Most GP surgeries enforce this nine-minute policy, allowing some leeway but requiring punctuality to maintain order. If a patient is more than ten minutes late, their appointment is typically recorded as a no-show, and the doctor moves on to the next patient.

NHS consultations generally last about ten minutes, although many now extend to 15 minutes or longer to accommodate more complex health issues. Patients with multiple or complicated concerns might be asked to book separate appointments to ensure thorough care.

To reduce pressure on GP appointment availability, the NHS is encouraging patients to use local pharmacies for minor health issues. Pharmacists can manage common ailments such as sinus infections, earache, sore throats, insect bites, shingles, and urinary tract infections. They can also prescribe certain medications and offer additional services like blood pressure monitoring, contraceptive advice, and smoking cessation support.

By understanding and respecting the nine-minute rule, patients help ensure their GP surgeries run smoothly and fairly, ultimately improving healthcare delivery for everyone.
