Known as one of England’s best-preserved forests, the Forest of Dean is home to ancient trees—one believed to be around 1,000 years old—and has inspired countless artists and writers. Most famously, J.R.R. Tolkien drew inspiration from the area’s enchanting scenery when creating the mythical forests in his Lord of the Rings trilogy.

At the heart of Gloucestershire, the Forest of Dean is distinguished by its lush greenery, moss-covered rocks, and medieval market towns. Visitors can explore a broad range of activities, from cave tours and sculpture trails to heritage railways, ensuring an engaging experience for all ages.

Puzzlewood, one of the forest’s most iconic spots, is thought to have influenced Tolkien’s vision of Middle-earth with its twisting tree roots, moss-draped stones, and otherworldly atmosphere. It has also been featured in major films such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, further cementing its mystical reputation.

Families can enjoy crossing wooden bridges, wandering winding paths, and climbing stone steps as they explore Puzzlewood’s magical terrain. Nearby, Clearwell Caves offer an exciting underground adventure with dazzling rock formations and atmospheric lighting that adds a hint of mystery.

Art enthusiasts will appreciate the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail, where nature-inspired artworks are seamlessly integrated into the woodland setting along peaceful walking routes.

For hikers, the forest boasts hundreds of miles of trails, with Symonds Yat Rock providing some of the most breathtaking views. Visitors can choose a leisurely 1.2-mile walk to admire panoramas over the River Wye and surrounding cliffs, or take on a more challenging 11-mile trek passing sites like King Arthur’s Cave and Seven Sisters Rocks.

For a change of pace, families can ride the Perrygrove Railway Adventure, a narrow-gauge railway featuring four stations and unlimited rides with admission. The adventure park also includes attractions like the Treetop Adventure and a tunnel maze, promising a fun-filled day for visitors of all ages.

With its blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and family-friendly activities, the Forest of Dean has rightly earned its place as one of the UK’s most enchanting destinations for 2026.
