After a four-month-long competition, a shortlist of 50 outstanding establishments, and more than 4,500 votes cast by enthusiastic readers, Gloucestershire Live proudly announces The Cheese Rollers in Shurdington as Gloucestershire’s Pub of the Year.
The Cheese Rollers captured 14.7% of the vote, edging out a strong field to take home the coveted title. Owned and operated by local couple Mary and Shaun Tippings, the pub embodies the heart of village life while honoring one of Gloucestershire’s most famous traditions. Named after the annual Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling event, this charming pub has become a beloved hub for locals and visitors alike.
Shaun expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community for their unwavering support: “It’s amazing — truly a testament to our locals who keep coming back. It’s a bit emotional, really. My wife even got a bit teary earlier.”

The pub’s history is as distinctive as its name. Originally called The New Inn in 1969, it was renamed The Cheese Rollers to celebrate the nearby, world-renowned cheese rolling spectacle held just 2.7 miles away at Cooper’s Hill. Inside, the pub is adorned with memorabilia including a photo of World Champion Chris Anderson, winner lists, and cheese covers from past races. Shaun shared a lighthearted anecdote about the curiosity of patrons asking if actual cheeses are stored inside: “If they were, they’d probably be pretty smelly by now!”
Looking ahead to 2026, The Cheese Rollers has exciting plans in store. A refurbishment set for January will give the pub a fresh mini facelift. Additionally, the popular annual cider festival is scheduled for next summer, promising to attract hundreds of guests once again. The pub also eagerly anticipates the excitement of the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling event, a highlight on its calendar.
Open every day of the week, The Cheese Rollers continues to welcome all who seek good food, warm hospitality, and a true taste of Gloucestershire’s unique character.
