Gloucestershire coach Mark Thorburn acknowledged his team’s below-par batting display as they fell short in their Metro Bank One-Day Cup opener against Leicestershire on Wednesday.
The Gloucestershire side were dismissed for 235 runs in 49 overs, with Cameron Bancroft leading the charge with 40 runs. A crucial last-wicket partnership of 43 between Daryl Ahmed (29) and Will Williams (14 not out) prevented an even lower total.
Leicestershire faced a challenging chase but secured victory with two wickets remaining and ten balls to spare. Ben Cox anchored the innings with a patient 51 off 59 deliveries.

Reflecting on the match, Thorburn commented, “We didn’t post enough runs. The pitch played tricky with variable bounce, which disrupted our middle order. Without that valuable 40-run stand at the end, our total would have been much less.”
He added, “If we had steadied the innings in the middle overs, we could have pushed towards a 250-260 target, which might have made the difference in what was a low-scoring game. Their solitary half-century was enough to tip the scales.”
Thorburn also praised his team’s bowling effort: “Our bowlers fought hard to keep the contest alive until the 49th over. Although the result wasn’t in our favor, there are positives to build on for the next game.”
Gloucestershire will look to bounce back when they face Somerset today at 2 pm, with both teams eager to claim their first win of the tournament.
