Gloucestershire coach Mark Thorburn acknowledged his team’s batting fell short as they suffered a narrow defeat to Leicestershire in their Metro Bank One-Day Cup opener on Wednesday.
The Gloucestershire side was bowled out for 235 in 49 overs, with Cameron Bancroft top-scoring at 40. A crucial final-wicket partnership of 43 between Daz Ahmed (29) and Will Williams (14 not out) prevented an even lower total.
Leicestershire faced a challenging run chase but ultimately secured victory with two wickets remaining and ten balls to spare. Ben Cox was instrumental in the chase, scoring 51 runs off 59 balls.

Thorburn reflected, “We can’t overlook the fact that our total was a few runs shy of what was needed. The pitch presented variable bounce, making batting tricky, and we lost too many wickets in the middle overs. Without that last 40-run stand, we might have fallen well short of the full 50 overs.
“If we had been able to consolidate longer in the middle, we could have pushed towards 250-260, which might have made the difference in this low-scoring contest. Leicestershire had one key player reach 50, and in games like these, that can be decisive.
“The bowlers fought hard, keeping us in the game until the 49th over. Despite the loss, there are positives we can build on for our next match.”
Gloucestershire will face Somerset today at 2pm, with both sides eager to claim their first win of the competition.
